The cost of items in the store range from $1 for candy to $35 for a sweatshirt. The average amount that each camper brings is between $20 and $80.
We strongly encourage campers to place their money into a camp store account upon their arrival to camp on Sundays. This allows campers to visit the store whenever it is open without the worry of carrying or losing money. At the end of the week, we give campers back in cash any money that they did not spend.
Camp stores serve a few purposes. First, there is a fundraising component to a store. Second, snack food does help campers keep up a certain amount of energy. Third, its helps with organization of campers since its a centralized location and is operated by our office staff.
Lastly, when a kid buys a t-shirt, hat, wristband, or sweatshirt that has the camp's logo on it, it helps establish the camp culture. Whether that culture be at camp or back at school. When kids see each other wearing camp paraphernalia, they know they have a common experience they have shared. Plus, when a kid puts on that sweatshirt in December, it helps remind them of the lessons they may have learned at camp.
One of the quirky lines that is used in the camp store is "When you wear Oswegatchie clothing away from camp, it makes you a part of a secret society. " Our clothing has been spotted and recognized as far away as Virginia, Moab, and Denali National Park!
Oswegatchie also has an online store option at www.oswegatchiestore.com. Here you can see photos of our products or even place an order to be picked up by the camper when they arrive at camp.
* Money Saving Tip - If your camper wants to make a Tie Dye, they will a need white t-shirt. We do sell them for $3 each.
* Headache Saving tip - If you send your kid to camp with a huge care package, they need to turn it into a staff member for safe storage. If they can not share and eat everything in the first night and try to store food in their luggage. Mice and Squirrels will chew holes through that luggage to get to the food.
