Summer Camp Employment and the Why of Camp?

Welcome to our Summer Camp Employment page. On this page you will find everything you need to apply for work at our camp. If you are a first time applicant to work at a summer camp, please watch this video from Camp Tecumseh in Indiana. They have distilled the essence of what it means to work at a summer camp and the "why" camps are important.

Full Disclosure: The YMCA camps are part of a christian organization, while Oswegatchie has no religious affiliation or focus.

Summer Employment Applications

Our application deadline is Feb 10th, 2020. We can accept applications past this date, but there is no guarantee of an interview or follow up. However, it doesn't hurt to ask in case a position opens up. Jobs like lifeguards are often still in demand.

Staff applicants need to be at least graduating from high school the June before working at the camp. Due to our teenaged campers, the age and maturity of staff is a major factor. Base staff pay does start at $300 per week. The job includes room, board, staff training, which all adds real value to the job. Specialized staff have a higher pay scale, such as medical staff.

2021 Summer Note: If you are hired to work at Oswegatchie for 2021, we can interview and hold positions, but we don't know what capacity we will have or how the program would change. During the interview process, I will spell out what we know or don't know about the upcoming season.

The most important step in working at Oswegatchie is applying. The second most important step for 2021 will be having the patience to work it all out.

Excelsior,
Bill Waite

When working at Oswegatchie, certifications are important. Without a minimum number of first aid & cpr certified staff, we can not operate. Please review the files below from the NYS Department of Health that are recognized for summer camp permit operation. Oswegatchie typically pays you for additional certifications, especially lifeguards, WSIs, camp aquatic directors, and EMTs. These

If you are interested in working at the Oswegatchie Summer Camp, do as much research as possible before applying and the job interview. Oswegatchie Summer Camp is a culture shock for new staff new to summer camp. Spend as much time as possible reading our brochures, websites, and facebook page. We want you to make sure this is the best possible opportunity for you to experience.

Additionally, Oswegatchie prefers to have staff that are at least graduating from high school that June. Since our campers are in high school, the older a counselor, the better their ability to make smart decisions.
